One hundred St. John the Baptist Diocesan High School students and faculty slept outside in boxes on the West Islip campus last week. It was part of a Homeless Awareness Project coordinated by campus ministry in conjunction with the school’s annual Thanksgiving Prayer Day and food collection for the Msgr. Ryan Outreach in Wyandanch. They joined in a prayer service, waited on a “soup line” and experienced the Suffolk County Police telling them they had to “move along” after midnight. The school’s gym served as the makeshift “shelter” where they stayed until morning, when they shared their experience with fellow students at the prayer day. The day included student reflections on gratitude, the collection and distribution of more than 960 bags of food, and ended with the celebration of the Eucharist
St. Brigid/Our Lady of Hope Regional School in Westbury hosted its 18th Thanksgiving Senior Citizen Liturgy & Luncheon Nov. 22. Father Greg Rannazzisi and St. Brigid’s pastor, Msgr. Ralph Sommer, celebrated Mass. Seventh- and eighth-grade students were hosts and servers for their lunch guests, more than 100 local seniors. The school chorus and the students in nursery through fifth-grade provided the entertainment, all to say “thank you” to the senior citizens in their community.
