Catholic Scouting sponsors high adventure trek

The diocesan Catholic Committee on Scouting is offering two partial scholarships for older Catholic Boy Scouts and Venture Crew members to participate in the St. George Trek, a high adventure leadership program at Philmont Scout Ranch in northeastern New Mexico from July 7 to July 22, 2011.

Older teens from around the country will experience Philmont’s high adventure backpacking program along with selected priests, religious men and women and seminarians. The trek includes Catholic leadership training and vocation awareness on the trail and at the Madonna Retreat House in Albuquerque, New Mexico. Participants will be asked to share their experience at home and become effective peer leaders in their diocese.

The diocesan committee’s scholarships will cover the $800 national program fee. Transportation and incidental expenses are the responsibility of the participant.

Catholic Boy Scouts and Venturers, both girls and boys, who are entering sophomore, junior or senior year of high school in the fall of 2011 are eligible to apply. The screening committee will consider applicants’ demonstrated leadership potential, involvement in Church, school and community activities and achievement of Scouting’s religious emblems. For application forms and more information, contact Father Gerard Gentleman, diocesan Scout chaplain at 516-938-3846 or ggentleman@drvc.org.
