Scranton, PA — Sister M. Sarita Gesler, of the Sisters, Servants of the Immaculate Heart of Mary, died October 1 at Our Lady of Peace Residence here.

Sister Sarita entered the IHM congregation on February 2, 1941 and made her temporary profession of vows on August 2, 1943 and her final profession of vows on August 2, 1946.

Wellesley Hills, MA — Sister Mary Francis McConnell died on Oct. 5 at Mount

Wellesley Hills, MA — Sister Mary Francis McConnell died on Oct. 5 at Mount Saint Vincent here at the age of 97. She was a Sister of Charity (Halifax) for 75 years.

In the Diocese of Rockville Centre, Sister Mary Francis served at St. Agnes High School, Rockville Centre from 1977-80.  She also ministered in the Diocese of Brooklyn, Massachusetts and Bermuda. She retired to Mount Saint Vincent in 2004 from Bermuda due to failing health.

Amityville — Sister Regina Bernadette Wesnofske, 94, died Oct. 4. She had dedicated 78 years to religious life as a Sister of St. Dominic.

She was born on Long Island on July 24, 1918. At the time of her entrance into religious life on August 30, 1934, she was a member of St. Hugh of Lincoln Parish, Huntington Station. She received the habit on August 15, 1935 and was given her religious name, Sister Regina Bernadette. One year later, August 18, 1936, she pronounced her religious vows.

Amityville — Sister Rose Carmel Saladino, 98, died on Oct. 4. She had dedicated 80 years to religious life as a Sister of St. Dominic.

She entered the congregation on August 30, 1932. The next year she was admitted to the novitiate and received the habit and her religious name, Sister Rose Carmel. On August 25, 1934, she pronounced her religious vows.

Sound Beach — Msgr. John A. McGuire, 87, pastor emeritus of St. Louis de Montfort Church here, died Sept. 10.

His Mass of Transferral was celebrated Sept. 13 at St. Louis de Montfort, with Msgr. William Hansen presiding and pastor Msgr. Charles Papa as homilist. His funeral Mass was celebrated Sept. 14 here. Bishop William Murphy presided and Msgr. Robert Emmet Fagan was homilist.

Wilton, CT. — Sister Rosemary Delaney, 83, longtime educator, died Sept. 10 at Lourdes Health Care Center here. She had been a professed member of the School Sisters of Notre Dame for 63 years.

In 1946, after attending high school at the SSND Juniorate in Fort Lee, N.J., she entered the congregation. She was given the religious name Nicholas Mari and professed her first vows in August 1949. She professed her final vows in 1955.

North Providence, R.I. — Sister Therese Landry, 85, a Franciscan Missionary of Mary, died Sept. 18 at the Franciscan Missionaries of Mary Residence here.

Before entering the Franciscan Missionaries of Mary, she worked as an assistant teacher in a first-grade classroom, assisted in the supervision of children at Mt. St. Francis, was active in the Girl Scouts, and was leader of a Legion of Mary group.

Virginia Beach, Va. — Sister Marilyn Therese Lieber, 80, a Daughter of Wisdom and formerly known as Sister Catherine of the Eucharist, died Aug. 10.

Sister Marilyn was born in Brooklyn. She entered the novitiate on July 27, 1950, and made her profession on February 2, 1952.

Brentwood — Sister Ann Patricia Kelly, formerly Sister Joseph Inez, a member of the Congregation of the Sisters of St. Joseph, died in Maria Regina Residence here on August 9. She was in the 62nd year of her religious life.

She entered the congregation in 1950. She obtained a BS degree in social studies from St. John’s University, Jamaica; an MS in social studies from Queens College and an MA in theology from St. John’s University.

His Mass of Transferral was celebrated Aug. 10 at St. Martin of Tours Church here by Msgr. Christopher Heller with Father Thomas Colgan as homilist. His funeral Mass was celebrated Aug. 11 at St. Martin of Tours by Bishop William Murphy, with Father Richard Stelter as homilist.

Brooklyn — Sister of Mercy Margaret Clacherty, the former Sister Mary Robert, died on July 28.   

Sister Margaret was born in Dumbarton, Scotland and came as a child to Brooklyn. After graduating from Mercy Juniorate High School, she entered the Sisters of Mercy in 1937.

She ministered in the Diocese of Rockville Centre at Our Lady of Mercy Academy, Syosset (1961-63); St. John the Evangelist (1974-82) and Mercy High School, Riverhead (1982-96).

HAUPPAUGE — With St. Thomas More Church here filled to overflowing August 4, Bishop William Murphy presided at a funeral Mass for the parish’s pastor, Msgr. Francis S. Midura, 67,  who died July 30.

Msgr. Midura’s Mass of Transferral was celebrated August 3, also at St. Thomas More.
Born in Locust Valley, Msgr. Midura attended St. Pius X Prep Seminary in Uniondale, the Seminary of the Immaculate Conception in Huntington, and The Catholic University of America in Washington D.C.

Brentwood — Sister Janet Whelan, formerly Sister Raymond Maria, a member of the Congregation of the Sisters of St. Joseph, Brentwood, died July 13 in St. Joseph Convent in the 74th year of her religious life.

She entered the congregation from Our Lady of Perpetual Help parish, Brooklyn. She received a B.A. degree in math from St. John’s College, Providence, Rhode Island and an M.A. degree in theology from Providence College.

She entered the congregation in 1955. She earned a B.S. degree in human services from New York State University, Old Westbury, and studied in the field of social services in Fordham University.

Wilton, CT — Sister Mary Antoine Daniel Knipfing, who ministered in four states over five decades, died  on June 15 at Lourdes Health Care Center here. She was 100 years old and was celebrating her 80th jubilee as a professed member of the School Sisters of Notre Dame.
She was born in Westbury and was a parishioner of St. Brigid’s Church there. She attended the parish school, which was operated by the School Sisters of Notre Dame. She entered the congregation in 1929 and made her first profession of vows in 1932.

Born in Brooklyn, she entered the IHM congregation on September 7, 1949 and made her temporary profession of vows on May 8, 1952 and her final profession of vows on August 2, 1955.

Blue Point — Ursuline Sister Patricia Crowe, 74, formerly Sister Loretto, died June 25 at New York Queens Hospital.

She was raised in Howard Beach, where she graduated from Our Lady of Grace School. She received a bachelor’s degree in elementary education from St. John’s University and a Master of Arts degree in art education from SUNY New Paltz, as well as certifications in elementary and art education and administration. She entered the Congregation of the Ursuline Sisters of Tildonk on September 8, 1956.

Amityville — Sister Grace Burke, 89, died on May 28. She had dedicated 69 years to religious life as a Sister of St. Dominic.

On February 2, 1943, Sister Grace entered the Amityville Dominicans. In August, she received the habit and her religious name Sister Mary Grace. One year later, on August 7, 1944, she pronounced her religious vows.
