In one of the most remarkable accomplishments in diocesan CHSAA history, St. John the Baptist Diocesan High School, West Islip, was crowned tournament champions after completing the regular season in last place with a 1-11 conference record. The seventh-seeded Cougars swept through the playoffs, capping their run with an 82-70 victory over No. 5 St. Anthony’s, South Huntington, in the Feb. 29 final at Hofstra University. SJB sophomore center Kyle Williams dominated the title game, scoring 34 points and grabbing 32 rebounds, to earn MVP honors. The win earned the Cougars a trip to the state CHSAA tournament, where they defeated Canisius, Buffalo, 63-52, in a March 4 semifinal at LIU Post. SJB (8-20) will battle Iona Prep, New Rochelle for the championship March 10 at 3:30 p.m. at Fordham University.
