In a setting befitting a postseason championship game, Long Island high school football powerhouse St. Anthony’s (South Huntington) was stunned Sept. 7 on its home turf, dropping a 59-21 decision to nationally-ranked Bergen Catholic, N.J. More than 5,000 fans from the two schools packed the bleachers for the highly anticipated season opener, which was broadcast live by the MSG Varsity network. The loss snapped a 29-game winning streak for the Friars, who have captured 10 of the last 11 New York CHSFL titles. St. Anthony’s opens league play with a road game against Iona Prep (New Rochelle) on Sept. 15. Below, St. Anthony’s senior lineman Cody Katter reads a prayer before kickoff.
