Sister Maria Magdala O’Boyle, IHM


SCRANTON — Sister Maria Magdala O’Boyle, a teacher, died Oct. 28 at the age of 105. She entered the Sisters, Servants of the Immaculate Heart of Mary in 1922, and made her final profession of vows on December 8, 1930.

She taught in Catholic elementary schools for 60 years, including locally at St. Peter of Alcantara, Port Washington (1953-61 and 1970-75); St. Mary’s, Manhasset (1961-62); Our Lady of Good Counsel, Inwood (1963-69); and SS. Philip and James, St. James (1975-78).

She also worked in schools in New York City, Pennsylvania, Maryland and North Carolina. From 1988 until the time of her death she served as a prayer minister at the Marian Convent and Our Lady of Peace Residence here.

She received a Bachelor of Arts degree in education from Marywood College.

She is survived by two nieces: Rosemary Gutierrez of Roanoke, Va., and Mary Patricia O’Boyle Boughner of Highland Park, Ill.

Her funeral Mass was celebrated Nov. 1 at Our Lady of Peace Residence, with burial following at St. Catherine Cemetery, Moscow, Pa.
