Msgr. John A. McGuire


Sound Beach — Msgr. John A. McGuire, 87, pastor emeritus of St. Louis de Montfort Church here, died Sept. 10.

His Mass of Transferral was celebrated Sept. 13 at St. Louis de Montfort, with Msgr. William Hansen presiding and pastor Msgr. Charles Papa as homilist. His funeral Mass was celebrated Sept. 14 here. Bishop William Murphy presided and Msgr. Robert Emmet Fagan was homilist.

Msgr. McGuire was born Sept. 30, 1924 in Empor Ballynacargy, Ireland. He was educated at St. Joseph’s Retreat in Sligo, Ireland, and was ordained to the priesthood in Dublin on May 28, 1950, as a Passionist priest.

In 1977 he was assigned as assistant dean for Our Lady of Perpetual Help Deanery. He became dean in 1978. In 1982, he became pro-synodal examiner. In 1984, he became chaplain for the Suffolk County Police Department. He was named a monsignor in 1985. Msgr. McGuire retired in 1999, with residence at St. Louis de Montfort.    

He is survived by nieces and nephews in Ireland. Burial was in Holy Sepulchre Cemetery in Coram.
