Port Jefferson Station — Deacon Joseph Scollan, who had ministered at the Parish of St. Margaret of Scotland, Selden, for 32 years, died Aug. 14. Deacon Scollan, 68, was ordained to the permanent diaconate May 1980 by Bishop John R. McGann.
Deacon Scollan served in the parish’s baptism, pre-Cana and Renew programs as well as the many “comedy stage presentations” offered to the parish during that time. He helped the parish’s ongoing evangelization efforts through his participation in the parish’s Men’s Group, Alpha Courses and Life in the Spirit seminars, as well as offering times of prayer and recollection for various groups throughout the parish. An avid reader, Deacon Scollan’s love of Scripture bore fruit through his dynamic preaching, which touched the hearts of many.
His Mass of Transferral was celebrated by Father James Wood, pastor, on Aug. 16. The homily was preached by Deacon Walter Williams, a classmate now ministering in the Diocese of Norwich, CT. His Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated by former pastor, Father Chris Aridas, Aug. 17. Both Masses were at St. Margaret of Scotland Church. Burial was at Holy Sepulchre Cemetery.
Deacon Scollan was predeceased in 2011 by his wife, Mary. He is survived by his two daughters, Joanne (Daniel) Williams and Patricia (Anthony) Giordano, and five grandchildren.
