St. Agnes Medal Honorees

TLIC is featuring brief profiles of each of the honorees chosen by their parishes to receive the 2010 St. Agnes Medal in recognition of their service to the people of God in their parishes and communities. The medals were presented to each of the awardees by Bishop Murphy at St. Agnes Cathedral Sept. 17.

Cheryl Hatala, St. Rocco, Glen Cove (with pastor Father Aaron Vellaramparampil and her husband James): A life-long parishioner who supports all the spiritual and social events at St. Rocco’s, Cheryl takes the children to the parish center during the 10:15 Sunday Mass to teach them the Scriptures of the day at their own level. She has also begun Girl Scouts at St. Rocco.

Maureen Cleary, St. Joseph, Hewlett: “Maureen is a wonderful woman of faith who puts that faith into action daily,” writes pastor Father Thomas Moriarty. “Her concern for the poor and those who find themselves in hard times is admirable.”

Robert Wisco, St. Ladislaus, Hempstead (with parish administrator Msgr. Brian McNamara): Robert “has a wonderful personality,” wrote his previous pastor, Msgr. Edward Wawerski. He “always assists in parish functions, is a lector, participates in the annual Church bazaar, is an usher at special events,” and helps at various special programs for children and adults.

Edward and Madeline Conner, St. Agnes, Greenport: Madeline and Ed came to St. Agnes 15 years ago and immediately resumed their ministries as lectors and extraordinary ministers of Holy Communion that they had practiced in their previous parish. Great supporters of the parish, they are involved in several volunteer ministries and committees.
